ISRAELI DANCE & ROBIN STARR (OF THE DIFFERENT SOCKS DANCE COMPANY)
DEBKA OLE - (2010) - LINE (DEBKA)
A long time dancing friend had taught my dance Shalom to some Grade 3 primary students. She invited me along so they could meet the choreographer. Whilst thinking about the impending visit, I was trying to remember the repertoire for that age group, and couldn't remember many (if any) debkas, so I started creating one for them. I finished the dance, created the music and then recorded it. Whilst working through the vocalisations, I finished the dance one day with a resounding "Ole". It was at that point that I changed the name from it's initial Debka HaHalicha (The Walking Debka) which I felt was a little too pedestrian, to Debka Ole.
There are three repetitions, with the musical intensity increasing with each one. From the second repetition, vocalising is encouraged. This dance provides a good opportunity to teach boisterous enthusiasm without descending into excess. The pupils really responded well to the physical and vocal aspects of the dance, learned it quickly and enjoyed it.
