ISRAELI DANCE & ROBIN STARR (OF THE DIFFERENT SOCKS DANCE COMPANY)

DEBKA LEV - (2007) - LINE (DEBKA)

Created for my grandson Sebastian Lev Starr

My grandson was active from birth, so there was no problem in choosing a vigorous debka as his dance. The name Debka Sebastian did not do anything for me, but Debka Lev just rolled of the tongue.

The introductory clap/walk was done one day to console Sebastian when he was crying , and the chorus uses exactly the same rhythm as the introduction. The movements for the three verses represent awareness of legs, arms and first attempts at crawling. Rest is symbolised by the device of step together (gradually increasing in number) between chorus and verse, so the dance symbolises a day in the life of Sebastian - starting out fresh with no need of rest, resting more frequently as the day progresses and, with the very last movement of the dance, falling asleep.

Apart from the introduction and the clapping of hands on thighs in the chorus, hands are held throughout the dance.

The music was notated and recorded after the choreography was finished, so the music was written to the steps, reversing the normal procedure.

The registration of this dance was approved by the Irgun in September 2007, having been taught at Hora Keff in August 2007.
